Education: Classroom Management

Introduction, Study & Examination Advice, Health & Safety in Educational Establishments

The professionally written, edited and produced Core Publication entitled “Classroom Management: A Proactive Approach”,comprise the Study Materials for the CIC Diploma Program and/or Subject of “Education: Classroom Management”. Note that in this introduction we use the term ‘teacher’ to refer to all teachers, heads of departments, school heads, classroom managers, and educators in general.

The content and teachings of the Core Publication is of great benefit and interest to all current and future teachers and classroom managers; it is also of great importance to all heads of departments and headmasters/headmistresses of schools and educational establishments, and other educational stakeholders because they need to thoroughly understand the concepts and approaches, so that they are able to guide and advise teachers on how to implement proactive classroom ideas and concepts. In addition, head-teachers and ‘traditional’ or ‘old-fashioned’ teachers and educators need to be aware of contemporary proactive concepts and methodologies of teaching and classroom management in order to be able to encourage and support an overall community focused on proactive education.

Applying the concepts and approaches explained in the Core Publication may be a challenge for some teachers and ‘classroom managers’. But teachers should try to implement the concepts and approaches, see what works well and what is less successful, assess and analyse what is effective and achieves desired results, and what does not, and why. If successful outcomes are not achieved, then the teacher should try to implement the concepts and approaches in a different manner.
It is to be accepted that not all teachers will immediately or readily accept or agree with or understand all of the teachings, approaches, concepts, strategies, advice and guidance given in the Program; but at the very least being aware of the main approaches and ideas and modifying current teaching methodologies will certainly be beneficial, and should lead to better teaching. Many of the ideas and concepts can be implemented rapidly; other concepts might take more time to introduce and put in place, and may require the teacher to gain more confidence in the thoughts, ideas and processes - which effective study of the Study Materials will provide.

The Core Publication focuses mainly on US and Western teaching practices - these being the areas where most in-depth research and reporting on teaching and education has taken place – but the Core Publication covers a wide variety of student cases: city, suburban and country; wealthy and deprived areas; and all types of schools and students - and the concepts of “Classroom Management: A Proactive Approach” is valid for all. A good teacher will understand, and adapt, all these core concepts and approaches to meet the teaching and classroom environment in which he or she is a teacher.
In addition to Chapters 1 to 9 of the Core Publication there follows in this publication a Chapter on ‘Health & Safety in Educational Establishments’. This is a subject which in recent times that has gained greatly in importance, awareness and prominence, for educational, social and legal/statutory reasons. The Chapter (Chapter 10) is general in approach, and is designed to introduce important features relating to educational (and general) health and safety, and to encourage all involved in teaching and education to tale a wider perspective and risk-assessment based view of the topic.
